Things To Do
In San Antonio
There is more things to do in San Antonio other than the Alamo. San Antonio is a beautiful metropolis city, it is known for its busy riverwalk and it is home of the Alamo. Although these sites are a must see, there is a lot more things to do in San Antonio. So saddle up your horses and come explore this city like the locals.
1. The Shops At La Cantera
La Cantera is an open air shopping mall very popular with the locals and their pets. That’s right! This mall allows your well behaved pooches to stroll the shops along with you. Although I am not big on shopping, like many other locals I frequent the mall for its chic and laid back vibe and its trendy restaurants. A lot of these restaurants have a great happy hour! Sit on the patio of Kona to people watch or head over to Palenque Grill for some yummy Mexican food.
2. The Rim
The Rim is another popular shopping spot in San Antonio and with good reason. There is many things to do. They have both affordable and luxury stores, they have a huge movie theater, a bowling alley, nightlife and plenty of restaurants to refuel. If you head over on a Sunday, head to Mashd for brunch. It is one of my favorite spots and if brunch is your thing. Make sure to check out my favorite brunch spots in town.
3. Natural Wildlife Ranch
Enjoy a Texas Safari. Wildlife Ranch covers over 450 acres of Texas Hill Country where you can witness Ostriches, camels, Zebras and many more animals roaming freely. The entree fee is $22 per person and you are given a baggie of food to feed the animals during your safari drive, you drive your own vehicles on the grounds. The drive can take about an hour, depending on how much you stop. I highly recommend getting there as soon as they open so you can enjoy it better. After your drive around the Safari you can also enjoy a petting zoo that is included in your admission. This activity is fun for anyone!
4. The Shooting Range
Don’t knock it until you try it. You don’t need any experience to shoot at the range and you don’t need to own a gun either. Staff at the ranges are very friendly and they can guide you into renting a handgun for your session or even set up a lesson for you. Every range is different therefor all the prices and hours vary. Make sure you do your research and select the one that will work best for you.
5. Ride The Scooters!
The scooters downtown are super fun! They are relatively easy to learn. I am horrible at riding a bike so if I can learn the scooter then you can too! You can easily rent one right from your phone. I use them when I want to get from point A to point B pretty fast or when I have a friend in town and they want to sight see. The scooters are always a hit!
6. The Pearl
The Pearl is the hottest trend amongst the locals, it is filled with historic buildings and it embraces the San Antonio culture. The area is set up with pedestrian only streets and unlike downtown The Pearl has plenty of free parking. The area also has an array of dining options. If you are here on the weekend you must visit the farmers market! The area has events supporting local artists as well as boutique shops. The pearl also has a nightlife of its own, I suggest having a cocktail at Hotel Emma which is located in the heart of The Pearl Brewery.
7. A Day Trip To Gruene
If you are looking for a rustic Texas feel then head on over to Gruene, TX. Gruene pronounced “Green” is a small town 40 minutes from San Antonio, it is known to have the oldest dance hall in Texas. The hall covers 6,000 square feet and features bands through out the week. You can find locals two stepping to live music and enjoying the show with a cold beer. The area also has cute shops, wine tastings and is known for its notorious multi level Gristmill restaurant overlooking the Guadalupe River. Speaking of river, on those hot summer days the river is open for swimming and tubing.
8. Cowboy Capital Of The World
If this is your first time in Texas and you were expecting to see cowboys and horses well.. you won’t be disappointed. Take a beautiful scenic ride over to the hill country town of Bandera. Its just a short drive away, but if you want to get the full experience, I recommend booking one night at a dude ranch. In Bandera, you can swim on the Medina River, you can hike in the hill country, you can ride horses, immerse yourself into the music scene and bar hop like the locals. In Bandera you will find that people still use their horses to get from point A to point B, so don’t be surprised if you see horses parked outside of the bar.
9. Dinner & Bellydance
Well… if you are familiar with what I do, I dance professionally part time when I am in town and when I am traveling the world, I look for Bellydance shows. So one of the things to do in San Antonio is go to a dinner and watch a free bellydance show.
Every Friday and Saturday without fail John The Greek has shows and don’t just come for the show.. make sure you come hungry because they have some of the best Greek food in town.
10. Brunch Like The Locals
Brunch, Brunch,& More Brunch! If we are not having barbacoa and big red on a Sunday it is because we are brunching. There are so many yummy places to have brunch honestly I am very particular with my brunch spots and that is why I put together a list of my favorite brunch spots in San Antonio. If you are thinking of brunching, head over to get the full list of restaurants.
